Hi all, I’m Caroline and I’m the new Public Affairs Officer for Community Pharmacy Scotland. I’m writing this blog post at the end of my first week to give a little insight into the whirlwind that is being introduced to CPS and the complex world of community pharmacy in Scotland!

As a quick introduction: my job as the Public Affairs Officer is a new position within the Policy and Development team that I am excited to get to grips with. The main focus of my job will be in promoting CPS’ vision and identifying how we can best engage with a wide range of stakeholders who are involved in health policy in Scotland to get our message across effectively.

With that in mind, my first port of call is to learn all about how CPS operates internally to provide an excellent service to our members, as well as how we work with the Scottish Government, the NHS, Health Boards and our network of pharmacists so that community pharmacy remains a vital part of how Scotland provides health care to its people. I don’t claim to fully understand all of this yet, but with the patient training of my colleagues I’ll get there soon!

On Wednesday, I met the CPS Board and briefly spent a bit of their lunch break with them. It is great that they are such a friendly and approachable group of people, and our discussions quickly turned to one of my pet topics, running! I’m looking forward to getting to know the Board members better and working closely with them in order to take our strategic direction and work towards achieving the CPS Vision.

I also visited the Scottish Parliament with my lovely colleague Kirsten. We found the tour very informative and it was a great first introduction to the Parliament for me, as I’m sure I’ll have cause to be back there speaking to MSPs before long.

I’ve really enjoyed my first week and have had a very warm welcome from all of my new colleagues. As part of the Policy and Development team, I am working closely with Amanda, Adam and Kirsten to form of strategy of how we will best represent the interests of community pharmacy going forward.
