Inhaler Dispensing

Published: 08/09/21

Often times with inhalers, when you receive the prescription the quantity is given in number of doses or actuations, rather than number of packs.

For example, Salbutamol 100micrograms/dose inhaler CFC free may be prescribed in multiples of 200 doses.

When prescribed like this it will help you identify which pack size to dispense if there are more than one. However, when claiming, for the quantity you should enter how many packs (1, 2 etc) you have supplied, rather than following how it is prescribed. If there is more than one pack size, your PMR should ask you to select which one you are dispensing, and then this information will be included in the electronic message.

This prevents anomalies where the incorrect number of packs are paid, e.g., 200 packs instead of one, and ensure you are reimbursed accurately.
